仕女作為中國古代人物畫的專門題材，至遲在唐代中期已經發展成為一種獨立畫科。唐周昉、張萱乃當時之專門名家，周昉并有“周家樣”之目。宋代以后，仕女畫已經相當流行，傳世宋畫仕女，可謂屢見不鮮。明清時期，中國古代仕女畫最為興盛的時代——《紅樓夢》開篇中敘“金陵十二釵冊”，每一釵皆系寫一圖，以寓言其生平遭際之況，畫面除了以自然物象來間接暗示之外，其中多以仕女為意象來直接表現，即可見其流行之概焉。

本次展覽匯集了館藏仕女畫精品，時間跨度從清代中期至近現代，其作者既有仕女畫名家如費丹旭、改琦之流，亦有一些名不見經傳而難得一見的小名家。畫面構圖或取庭園一角，或狀閨閣之內，或在芳草之地，或行山水之間；配之以梧竹蕉石之景，而尤喜點綴春柳與梅花；情態或吹簫于花樹之下、或拈毫于紅窗之前、或嬉戲于家庭之內，亦有女紅、葬花之屬。形式上立軸、屏條、手卷、團扇、摺扇、冊頁皆有，技法則水墨寫意、工筆設色以及淺絳、白描兼備，風格大致以工細秀淡為主，意境則以婉約嫻靜為尚。明清以來江南閨秀之美，于此可見一斑。

Preface

To portray the fair lady is one special motif of figure painting in ancient China, and became an independent branch no later than mid-Tang dynasty. Renowned painters in this respect in the Tang dynasty included Zhou Fang and Zhang Xuan. This kind of painting had become quite popular since the Song dynasty and many were passed down through generations. It reached its peak in the Ming and Qing dynasty. For instance, A Dream of Red Mansion, one of the four most important classical novels in Chinese history, depicts twelve ladies with a painting for each and implicates their life course. Apart from natural objects, the images of fair ladies were often used to present their life directly, which also shows how popular this motif was.

This exhibition has selected high-quality fair lady paintings from mid-Qing dynasty to modern times. The artists include famous ones such as Fei Danxu, Gai Qi, etc. and also some lesser-known but rarely-seen ones. The composition of the painting is varied with garden, chamber, greens, mountain designs and plants like plum blossoms and willow. Ladies are doing different activities including playing the vertical flute, practicing calligraphy or painting, having fun, doing embroidery, etc. The paintings are in ink or color or other skills, in forms of hanging scrolls, handscrolls, fans and album leaves, with focus on delicate description and elegant style. This exhibition will provide visitors with access to the beauty of Jiangnan area in the Ming and Qing dynasty.
